The Quiet Job Search

How to look for the next job without losing this one

بقلم Claire Bramleyالناشر Sundar Books

Most advice about searching quietly is about hiding, and hiding is fragile. This book is about sequence: who finds out, in what order, and whether you are holding an offer when they do.

عن هذا الكتاب

Looking for work while you still have a job carries one fear above all others. What if they find out. That fear is not silly. Being discovered in week two, with nothing in hand, quietly costs you: the project that runs into next year goes to somebody else, your name comes off a list you did not know existed, and nobody ever says why. But the usual advice, use a private browser and tell nobody, is aimed at the smallest part of the problem. Secrecy relies on nothing going wrong, and something always goes wrong. This book is built on a different idea. A quiet job search is not about secrecy. It is about sequence. You cannot guarantee that nobody finds out. You can very often decide who finds out, when, and whether there is a written offer in your hand at the time. It starts with the leaks that actually happen, which are not the ones people worry about: the wardrobe, the calendar, the calls suddenly taken outside, the quiet withdrawal from anything that starts in January. Then the search itself, including the job board database your own employer may be paying to search, the recruiter rule that prevents almost every problem, and references, where more quiet searches come apart than anywhere else. Then what to say if your manager asks you directly, which almost nobody has thought about in advance. Then leaving: the counteroffer and why it usually ends badly, the resignation, and the notice period that decides what people say about you for years. Nothing in it requires you to lie. Not telling and lying are different things, and the difference matters practically as well as ethically.

ماذا ستتعلم

  • Why sequence beats secrecy, and how to decide the order people find out
  • The behavioural tells that give people away, none of which a privacy setting touches
  • How job board databases work, and why your employer may be able to search yours
  • The one sentence that stops a recruiter circulating your CV
  • Keeping references and background checks off your current employer until you resign
  • What to say when your manager asks you directly, without lying and without confessing
  • How to check whether the new job is genuinely better before you resign
  • Why a six week search is safer than a six month one
  • The counteroffer, and the narrow case where it is worth considering
