عن هذا الكتاب

Think of the last three things you bought that were not groceries or bills. You can produce a reason for each one. Now ask the harder question: why that day? The need did not appear on Tuesday afternoon. Something else did. There is a mechanical problem with money, which is arithmetic. This book is about the other one. You know a thing is not worth it and you buy it. You spend nothing for three weeks and then a great deal in one evening. You feel a lift when the parcel arrives and nothing when you open it. You would never hand over that much cash, and you tap a card for it without pausing. None of that is a failure of arithmetic, and resolving to be more disciplined is not a plan. This book covers what happens in your head: how money gets stored in compartments and spent differently depending on the label, why paying hurts and how every payment method since cash has been designed to reduce that hurt, why the first number you see decides what everything is worth, and why you keep the membership you never use. Then what is being done to you: the layout of a shop, physical and digital, manufactured urgency and what the countdown is really for, free delivery thresholds, the subscription business model that runs on your forgetting, and instalment credit dressed as convenience. Then the self that spends: buying as mood repair, buying to be somebody, the feed that quietly replaced your neighbours as the comparison, and why the upgrade you wanted for months stops mattering in six weeks. And finally what to do, which is not willpower. Friction put back deliberately, rules decided in advance, and an honest look at which spending is still worth it a year later, because some of it is. With twelve worked moments, the machinery labelled, and a note on which findings are solid and which are contested.

ماذا ستتعلم

  • Why money that arrives unlabelled gets spent, and what to do in the first minute
  • How every payment method since cash has been engineered to reduce the sensation of paying
  • The one question that handles subscriptions, sunk cost and things you already own
  • What a countdown is actually for, and the rule that makes it harmless
  • Why the parcel is a disappointment, and what the wanting was really doing
  • Which spending still feels worth it a year later, and which reliably does not
